Discord is one of the more popular chat tools, used in gaming communities as well as for other purposes. It’s so popular that it has attracted the attention of hackers, who have stolen users’ access to their accounts.
If a hacker has gained access to your Discord account, there are several things they can do. For example, they might steal your token, allowing them to log into the service using your username and password. Or they could get inside your private server data, which contains all the information you’ve uploaded to it (such as voice and video chats, photos, files, etc.) If a user impersonates you or someone else, others will think they’re real — including friends. Finally, the hacker could send phishing links to your friends, asking them to download some software, visit some site, or click on something else.
What to do right away
You’ll want to act quickly once you realize your account has been compromised. You’ll need to first change your password. But if your account is locked out due to suspicious activity, you can contact Discord support for help.
To begin the recovery process, go to dis.gd/hackedaccount. You can also navigate to https://discord.com/support and select “Hacked Account” from the drop-down menu at the top right of the page.
On the next screen, you’ll be asked to provide an email address and explain what went wrong. In this case, the person accessing your account added two-factor authentication without your permission. Click Next after completing the form.
After clicking Next, you’ll be given instructions on what to do. For example, you’ll be asked to verify your identity via email or phone number, and you’ll be told that the support team will review your request within 1-2 business days. The process should take about 48 hours, with an option to follow up via email.
How hacks happen and how to lower the risk
In general, Discord hacking occurs when a hacker gains access to a user’s account, either by stealing the credentials or through another method such as phishing. While chatting alone does not expose you to any risks, you should avoid clicking on links or downloading anything that you weren’t expecting.
It should be noted that Discord hacks occur relatively frequently, sometimes becoming a hot topic every few months. New scams tend to surface periodically, prompting users to warn each other across networks.
