Discord Clear Cache: How to Do It on Any Device and What It Fixes

If you're experiencing a problem with Discord, clearing its cache is a good idea. But what is Discord's cache? And why should you care?

Discord stores a copy of media like images and videos in the app locally on your device (a "cache"), but also keeps a copy of your account data and messages in the cloud. The local cache is separate from your account data.

Discord doesn't store messages or servers on your device, so clearing the cache won't delete them, and it shouldn't delete any of your account information either. The process may be useful for fixing slow load times, as well as for general troubleshooting.

You can clear Discord's cache by using the built-in storage controls for apps on your Android phone, which are accessed through the Settings menu. If you're running a computer, you'll need to manually delete the Discord cache folder.

On both platforms, clearing Discord's cache does not delete your messages, servers, or account data. That's because Discord stores that data on the cloud.

When you clear Discord's cache, only the cached data stored locally on your device is removed. Since the cache includes things like images, videos, and other media content, there's no guarantee that those items will return after clearing Discord's cache.

However, if you're having trouble with Discord not loading correctly, or if you want to improve the performance of Discord, then clearing the cache might help fix it.

Clearing Discord's cache on Android

To clear the cache on an Android device, navigate to the Settings menu, find the Apps option, then look for Discord within the list of installed applications. Tap into the Discord entry, then select Storage. From here, tap the Clear Cache button.

The cache includes all of the data Discord has downloaded to your phone, and clearing it simply deletes those files. Your Discord chats, messages, etc. will remain untouched — they’re stored separately in the cloud.

Clearing Discord’s cache on your computer

If you’ve decided that clearing the cache would resolve some of the issues you’re facing with Discord, then the same steps apply to your computer. However, since computers don’t use an app store, you’ll have to manually delete Discord’s cache instead of using the app settings menu.

First, launch your preferred file browser. Navigate to C:\Users\{your name}\AppData\Local\Discord\Cache (on Windows) or ~/Library/Application Support/Discord/Cache (on macOS). Then right-click the “Cache” folder, and choose Delete.

After you’ve cleared Discord’s cache, you’ll be left with just your regular Discord app, and everything should function normally again.
