Discord’s verification process, designed to deter botting in large communities, can sometimes trigger the error “This phone number is unable to be associated with this account,” which means that Discord has determined that the number you entered is already being used by another account. The message that Discord displays when it detects a duplicate number may vary slightly, but one example is: “An existing Discord account is already using this number.”
What Causes This Error?
There are two situations where this error typically appears:
When you first set up an account.
When you try to link a different phone number to your Discord account.
If you receive this error during the setup process, then the number is either tied to a forgotten or previously created Discord account, or the number was added via an alternative method (such as Google Voice) and Discord’s verification process has rejected it. Either way, you’ll need to remove the number from its current account before adding it to yours.
Note that this is not uncommon. More and more services are rejecting numbers provided through VoIP companies like Google Voice.
Self-Service Solution
In most cases, you should be able to access the other account holding the number and manually remove the number from that account. Once you’ve done so, you’ll be able to add it to your own Discord account after a waiting period. However, if you don’t remember what account that might be, you’ll need to submit a support ticket for further help.
If you do have access to the other account, here’s how you’ll remove the phone number from it:
Go to Settings > Privacy & Account > Security.
Locate the phone number.
Click on the option to remove the number.
If there is a waiting period, you will likely be informed.
Submit a Support Ticket
If you cannot access the other account holding the number, you’ll need to contact Discord Support directly.
To begin, visit Discord’s support website at https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. Select the Help & Support category, then choose the Account Verification subcategory.
Next, select “I want to request something else” and provide a description of the problem, including the error message you received and any additional details.
Finally, attach proof of ownership, such as photos or emails showing the number being used by another account.
Discord can usually resolve these issues quickly. If they cannot, they may forward your request to a customer representative.
Why Is Phone Verification Enforced?
Discord requires phone verification primarily to prevent spam bots and scam messages from reaching users within large online communities. A verified phone number acts as an anti-spam barrier, preventing spambots from contacting users without consent. While phone verification only confirms that a number is unique per account and not that the person entering it is actually the owner, this requirement helps keep Discord communities clean and safe.
