Discord has long been a go-to chat app, allowing users to communicate with friends, colleagues, and communities alike. But there are times when Discord fails, either due to server outages or issues on your device. In such cases, you might run into the “messages failed to load” error.

In this article, we’ll explain what the “messages failed to load” error means and how you can fix it yourself.

The “Failed to Load” Error Explained

Discord allows users to communicate across different servers — each of which acts like its own chat room. When you open up a server, you see all the channels that exist within that server (i.e., rooms for different topics) as well as any private messages between users.

But sometimes Discord is unable to fetch chat data from the appropriate source. This could be caused by server outages; unstable internet connections; glitches in the app itself; account bans; or simply temporary problems on Discord’s side. There’s also an argument that this particular error is triggered when loading the entire server, not just a specific channel. If so, the solution would be to select one channel rather than trying to load everything at once.

What causes the ‘messages failed to load’ error?

Discord couldn’t fetch chat data

You’re using an outdated version of Discord

Discord servers are down

Your network connection is unstable

There’s a glitch inside the Discord app

Discord banned your account

Discord servers are overloaded or experiencing temporary technical difficulties

Fix 1: Select only a single channel

One possible cause of this error is that Discord tries to load multiple channels within a server simultaneously. As such, it may get stuck loading them all together, preventing it from loading the content you want.

Instead, try selecting a specific channel instead of loading the entire server. That narrows down exactly what data Discord needs to fetch and prevents it from getting bogged down by loading other parts of the server.

Fix 2: Refresh the Discord client

If Discord is having trouble displaying certain information, refreshing the client may resolve the issue. It will close down the current session and start fresh, fixing any bugs or errors. The exact refresh method varies by device:

Android/iOS: Refresh the Discord interface.

PC: Refresh the Discord client.

Fix 3: Clear the Discord cache

Clearing Discord’s local cache should resolve this error. While Discord typically uses the latest available data stored on its servers, there may be outdated or corrupted files locally on your device that prevent the messages from loading properly.

Fix 4: Reset your network

A network reset will help clear up issues with unstable or weak Wi-Fi connections. To perform a network reset:

Close Discord completely.

In Task Manager (Windows), end the Discord task.

Restart your Wi-Fi router.

Wait approximately 30 minutes.

Relaunch Discord.
