Discord Stuck on Connecting: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

If Discord keeps getting stuck connecting, it's possible that you need to reboot your system. Otherwise, try restarting the Discord app itself. If those don't work, there are some more advanced fixes as well.

There’s an issue with Discord that can leave the service in a perpetual state of “connecting” or “disconnected.” Every time you try to join any call, whether voice or otherwise, it just leaves you waiting forever on one of these screens, and never completes the connection.

The good news is that these issues can be resolved relatively easily, either through a simple reboot of your device, resetting Discord, or simply logging out of the account altogether. However, we’ve heard of a particular problem when using Opera GX: the web version of Discord appears to get hung up specifically on the WebRTC portion of the application, which may cause the audio portion to hang.

Why Is Discord Getting Stuck On Connecting?

There are multiple reasons why Discord might get stuck while trying to connect. The simplest fix is usually to reboot your system. Otherwise, you could also try simply closing and reopening Discord (via Ctrl+R), or logging out of the Discord account completely.

Alternatively, if you’re still having trouble connecting to a Discord channel, you can try clearing the cache for the Discord browser extension by right-clicking its icon and selecting “Options,” then navigating to the “Advanced” tab. Once there, click on “Clear Cache.”

If all else fails, you could try reinstalling Discord from scratch, or even re-installing your entire operating system if you have to do so.

Is There An Issue With Discord Web In Opera GX?

Yes, but only if you're using Opera GX.

WebRTC handles most real-time communications on the internet today, including video calling applications such as Zoom, FaceTime, Google Meet, and Discord, to name a few. But WebRTC requires your computer and network to be able to communicate over UDP. This has led to numerous issues being reported where various applications, especially games and voice chats, appear to stop working or behave oddly.

However, Opera GX has specific settings for WebRTC, along with other network-related settings that can interfere with Discord’s ability to communicate properly. We've seen reports of this specific problem appearing within Opera GX users, though not others, although there was at least one report of this problem persisting for approximately two years now.

How Do I Determine Whether This Is A Broader Problem Or Just My Browser?

This depends upon how persistent the issue is and whether you feel comfortable testing different browsers. While we can’t tell you what exactly will solve your problem, here are some options that you can consider:

Test in a private window — Sometimes, cached data can prevent a browser from behaving normally, so you can try opening Discord in a private (or incognito) browsing session. If the problem doesn’t occur during this test, it’s likely due to some stored data causing an issue.

Try with a fresh profile — You can also create a new user profile and see whether this changes things for the better. This is probably easiest in Firefox and Chrome.

Try another browser — If everything works fine outside of Opera GX, then it’s almost certainly the culprit. You can download the latest stable versions of both Chromium and Firefox here.
