Discord Stuck on Connecting: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

If you're trying to join a voice or video call, Discord might keep getting stuck in the same spot again and again. A typical issue involves your Discord status hanging on “Connecting” or “Disconnected,” but it won't ever resolve itself.

This can be an issue with the app, but more often than not, it's related to how browsers handle WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communications), which is how Discord connects users over the web. In particular, this problem seems to occur most often within Opera GX, where it hangs on RTC Connecting.

It’s worth noting that we’ve confirmed some quick fixes for this situation in general. But if none of those fixes seem to work, it might be time to check if this specific browser-specific glitch affects how Discord connects via WebRTC.

Why Discord Stuck on Connecting?

In general, when Discord tries to connect to others in a voice or video call, the connection fails, and Discord keeps retrying to reconnect. In this case, there isn’t any error message displayed, but instead, you just see the word “Connecting” or “Disconnected.”

If the issue occurs in every single call that you attempt to join, then the problem likely lies outside of the network. For example, this could relate to how the local machine is configured. Or maybe something as simple as restarting Discord, or even your entire system, will help.

How to Fix the General Discord Stuck on Connecting Issue

If you’re using the Discord desktop app, try simply closing and restarting it, by holding Ctrl+R. Doing so will restart the app, sometimes clearing out errors. Alternatively, try rebooting your entire PC. Both approaches are good ideas, and neither will hurt anything.

The other thing you can do is try logging out of your Discord account and then back in again. This doesn’t happen all the time, but it does work occasionally.

There’s also a known glitch that causes issues with Discord connecting through the “RTC” layer — essentially, this relates to the browser, and the way it handles real-time communications. To fix that, try resetting your settings, as described here.

Why Discord Web Gets Stuck at RTC Connecting

When Discord runs in the web version, it still relies upon its own server-side infrastructure, but it communicates with those servers using WebRTC. That means the web-based version of Discord requires your browser to communicate using WebRTC.

If you’re running the Discord app inside Opera GX, you might encounter an issue where the browser either blocks the necessary access or handles WebRTC incorrectly. The issue seems to occur regardless of what your Internet connection speed is, but we suspect it’s related to the browser configuration, rather than the actual speed of your network.

To confirm that this is an issue related specifically to Opera GX and not a wider issue, open Discord up in another browser. If it doesn’t reproduce the problem, then it’s highly likely that this is an issue with Opera GX. You can also test this in a new profile, or even in a new tab with “private browsing” enabled.

In addition, we know that there are certain network settings that can interfere with voice chat applications like Discord. As always, the best way to determine whether this is affecting you is to experiment.
