Discord Stuck on Checking for Updates: What Causes It and How to Fix It

Discord has been stuck at the update screen, unable to check for updates.

If your Discord app freezes at “Checking for updates,” it has not completed its update check. A network or DNS problem is one possible cause, but the screen alone does not identify your ISP as the cause.

Start by checking Discord Status. If an incident is affecting the service, wait for the official update before repeatedly reinstalling the app.

Next, fully close Discord, including any background Discord processes in Task Manager on Windows, and reopen it. Restarting the computer is another low-risk check. Discord’s official troubleshooting guide recommends checking your connection, restarting the app and keeping Discord up to date.

If Discord’s website is also unreachable, compare the result on another trusted network, such as a mobile hotspot. A different result can help narrow the problem to the network; it does not prove that a specific DNS provider is at fault. Check whether a firewall or security application is blocking Discord, without leaving your protection disabled.

A VPN changes the connection route and can sometimes change the result, but it is not the only fix and it is not guaranteed to solve an update loop. Use it only where permitted by your network rules; avoid unfamiliar VPN software just to test this problem.

Restarting a router normally does not erase its saved Wi-Fi password. Avoid a factory reset, which is a different action and can erase network settings. If the problem persists, follow Discord’s official support instructions and describe the screen, operating system, and connection checks you tried.
