Discord Status Meaning: What Each Status Color and Type Tells You

You’re on Discord. It’s easy to assume that others are either online or not, depending on the color indicators that appear next to their profile pictures in chat.

But Discord gives you more options than just being “online” or “offline.” The colors can be a little confusing — and it’s also possible to add your own custom status message. But what do they all mean?

Here’s how to interpret each of the four core statuses:

Online (green dot)

Idle (yellow dot)

Do Not Disturb (red dot)

Invisible (gray dot)

Then we’ll explain how to change them, too.

What does online mean on Discord?

If someone has a green dot above their profile picture in chat, then they’re online. They may be chatting with others, listening to a game or watching a stream, but they’re actively present on Discord.

If another user wants to interact with them, they’ll see them in the “online” bar at the top of Discord, along with their name. If the user is playing a game, the game title will appear there, too.

You can check if someone is available for conversation by looking for the green dot. Other users won’t know what you’re doing, however.

When is idle status triggered?

If you open Discord and don’t click or scroll through messages, games, videos or other content for about five minutes, Discord changes your status from online to idle.

Discord calls this state “Away From Keyboard,” or AFK, and automatically triggers the status change. It’s an indicator that you’re not actively interacting with Discord right now, but that it’s still open on your screen.

What does do not disturb mean on Discord?

The red dot next to your name means that you’ve chosen to put yourself into a “do not disturb” mode. This is sometimes called Busy as well, indicating that you are busy working and want to avoid interruptions.

While in DND mode, incoming notification alerts are suppressed.

Do note that people who choose this option are still considered “available” for interaction — they just don’t want to be interrupted.

What is invisible status on Discord?

A gray dot means you have set your visibility to “invisible.” In this mode, you won’t be seen as online by anyone else. While you’ll appear offline to others, you can still read messages and use Discord normally.

Invisible mode lets you monitor conversations without signaling that you’re online. Invisible mode doesn’t stop Discord from sending notifications; those will continue to arrive.

Custom status

In addition to the four standard availability statuses, Discord allows users to define a custom status that appears in addition to their availability indicator. Users can share a mood, activity, or even a one-liner.

The custom status operates independently from the online/idle/DND/invisible availability statuses and can be edited or removed at any time.

How to change Discord status

Changing your Discord status is simple whether you’re on the desktop app or mobile. On desktop, click on your profile card in the bottom left-hand corner, and then select the status you want from the menu below the Edit Profile button. To switch to a different status, click the same area again.

On mobile, tap the “You” section at the bottom of your home page, then tap the colored dot that appears next to your profile picture. Tap the status you’d like to show, and you’re done!
