Discord, the communication platform for gamers, is a social network and chat, video, and streaming platform all in one. It’s an essential hub of activity for people who want to keep in touch with their friends or talk about whatever they want. As such, Discord users know what it means to be online or offline, and how that affects their interactions.

Discord

When you’re logged into Discord, your presence status tells your friends whether you’re available to interact with them. If they see you as offline, then they know you’re either not there at all or otherwise busy (and probably shouldn’t ask). If you’re online, however, they can see what you’re playing and what music you’re listening to. They’ll also see whether you’ve set up a custom status message — but more on that later.

Invisible vs. Online

There are a number of ways you can signal your availability. In practice, though, there are only two: Invisible and Online. But what does that mean?

Invisible means exactly what you’d think. If you have a friend who doesn’t like talking about something too much, setting yourself to Invisible lets them know you’re around without making you seem like you’re hanging out. In this mode, you remain active, meaning that you can still read conversations that take place in a channel. However, other people will just see that you’re offline. The idea is that you can see what’s going on without others realizing that you’re paying attention to it.

Discord

This feature isn’t new; we first wrote about it here back in April 2021. Back then, the Reddit community that describes the function gave 7.3K upvotes to the original explanation.

Custom Personal Status

But now, we’ve learned that some Discord users prefer to customize their status messages, adding another layer of expressive detail that goes beyond the fixed presence indicators. Discord provides a “Set a personalized status” option, which allows users to write down any personal status message they wish. This can include everything from a simple “Working” to detailed notes about current situations.

Discord

You can use this to personalize the appearance of your account and even add details that your contacts might find relevant. For instance, if you’re meeting someone else and want to share your current status, simply type it in, and it will appear next to your avatar in Discord. Friends will then see that you’ve written it down, allowing you to convey whatever message you desire.
