The YouTube video editor in Canva is one of the most promising free editors, offering creators a place to start production. The tools are free and simple enough for even beginners, and there’s stock B-roll footage that you can use. There are scroll-stopping effects, too, plus combos of text animation.
Canva’s interface has been updated so that it works with the timeline. You’ll need to drag your media into the timeline first and then arrange them in any order. Canva adds transitions between clips, and you’ll sync up audio. This process isn’t overwhelming, and we think Canva’s new editor will appeal to people who have no editing experience.
You’ll layer in branding and content elements as well. You can add branded text, choose from hundreds of music tracks, or simply turn on captions. Transitions help you move from one idea to the next, and everything here seems ready for short-form content, whether that’s Instagram Reels, TikTok, or a YouTube Shorts upload.
AI Tools and Beginner Workflow
Canva’s AI tools fit right into this workflow, too. We like these tools because they’re simple, intentional, and actually doable — especially if you’ve never used an editor before. Canva also provides an opportunity for users to learn through its Design School, which includes tutorials for each function, tips and tricks, and more.
Canva offers a complete tutorial for those new to using Canva, covering each step along the way. The tool itself is designed in such a way that even those with no prior editing experience should be able to pick it up pretty quickly.
